Attorney Dori Chadbourne attended Mount Holyoke College, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in 1990 with a double major in Political Science and International Relations, and Harvard Law School, where she received her Doctorate of Jurisprudence degree, also cum laude, in 1993. Attorney Chadbourne is admitted to practice before all state courts in Maine and Massachusetts, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Districts of Maine and Massachusetts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Attorney Chadbourne began her legal career as a litigation attorney at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom where her practice focused on securities class actions, corporate governance, insider trading cases, business disputes, business torts, contract disputes, and First Amendment cases. In 1995, she transferred to Goodwin, Procter & Hoar in Boston, Massachusetts, now known as Goodwin Procter LLP to broaden her practice and experience. At Goodwin Procter, Attorney Chadbourne continued handling cases similar to those she had handled at Skadden Arps but broadened her practice to include toxic tort actions, consumer protection actions, RICO actions, ERISA matters, banking and mortgage litigation, fraud actions and a broader array of the tort and contract actions.
After practicing in Boston for seven years, Attorney Chadbourne returned to her home state of Maine, where she joined Pierce Atwood?s litigation department for one year before opening Chadbourne Law Offices. At Pierce Atwood, Attorney Chadbourne practiced primarily in the area of toxic torts. Since opening her own firm, however, she has refocused her practice on family law while continuing also to handle general civil litigation matters ranging from breach of contract and fraud claims to real estate disputes to business disputes and employment discrimination claims.
Attorney Chadbourne?s family law practice includes every aspect of family law from divorce and parental rights and responsibilities to child custody and child support matters to adoption and surrogacy matters. She specializes in cases involving complex financial issues and cases involving cutting edge issues, such as surrogacy and de facto parenthood. Attorney Chadbourne?s decision to practice family law and to refocus much of her practice to that area arises from her own divorce, as well as her experiences as a child of divorce, and her recognition of the need for more attorneys in that field who have strong litigation and trial backgrounds, who can be real advocates for their clients, and who possess the financial and tax knowledge necessary to structure or advocate for the best resolutions for their clients.
In addition to her work as an attorney and advocate, Attorney Chadbourne is a trained Guardian ad Litem qualified to represent children in both private family law cases and child protective cases in Maine. She also works as a private mediator in family law, private-party, and business cases, helping parties interested in amicable resolutions find common ground and structure settlements that serve their interests.
Before graduating from college and law school, Attorney Chadbourne served as the first-ever woman firefighter on the Pelham, Massachusetts Fire Department and also worked as a truck driver during her college summers. She grew up in Bethel, Maine, and is a twelfth generation Mainer. She moved to Portland in high school and returned to the area after attending college and law school and practicing for seven years in Massachusetts. Attorney Chadbourne is currently married to her high school crush and has three children.
